How many cans of cat food per day calculator

Calculate how many cans of wet cat food per day from kcal per can, daily calories, treats and any dry food you also feed.

Use the free calculator

Use kcal per can, not can size alone

Two cans that look the same can have very different calories. The useful label number is kcal per can, kcal per tray or kcal per pouch. Put that number into BowlMath before deciding how many cans to open.

Cans per day: quick reference

For wet-only feeding, divide the daily calorie target by kcal per can. Typical pate cans run about 90 kcal per 3 oz can and about 170 kcal per 5.5 oz can, but brands vary a lot; always use the number on your label.

Daily target3 oz cans (~90 kcal)5.5 oz cans (~170 kcal)
150 kcal/day~1.7 cans~0.9 cans
200 kcal/day~2.2 cans~1.2 cans
250 kcal/day~2.8 cans~1.5 cans

Mixed feeding changes the answer

If dry food or treats are part of the day, the wet food can count should go down. Count treats first, reserve any dry food calories second, then divide the remaining wet calories by kcal per can.

Per-meal planning

After the daily can count is calculated, split it by meals. For example, 1.5 cans per day over three meals is about half a can per meal.

Quick answers

Can I feed only wet food?

Yes, if the food is complete and balanced for your cat and the total daily amount fits the calorie target.

Should I round cans up or down?

Round practically, then watch weight trend and leftovers. Small daily rounding differences add up over weeks.
