Notes for Purina Pro Plan owners
Purina Pro Plan prints a "Calorie Content" line with kcal/kg plus kcal per cup for dry food and kcal per can for wet food. The dry formulas are dense: most sit above 4,200 kcal/kg, so a level cup of Pro Plan carries noticeably more calories than many grocery kibbles.
Take a cat whose vet target is 200 kcal a day, fed only dry food. With Specialized Adult Indoor Hairball Turkey & Rice Formula (480 kcal/cup) that is about 0.42 cups a day. With Senior Prime Plus Adult 7+ Chicken & Rice Formula (604 kcal/cup) it drops to 0.33 cups. Swapping formulas without re-measuring changes intake by about 26%.
Take a cat whose vet target is 200 kcal a day, fed only wet food. With Complete Essentials Chicken, Tuna & Wild Rice Entrée in Sauce (72 kcal per can) that is about 2.8 cans a day. With Complete Essentials White Meat Chicken & Vegetables Entrée in Gravy (73 kcal per can) it is about 2.7. The difference between the lightest and richest recipe is 1% per can.
- Because most Pro Plan dry formulas run 480 to 600 kcal per 8 oz cup, a quarter cup is already 120 to 150 kcal. Weigh the daily portion once with a kitchen scale rather than scooping by eye.
- The Complete Essentials wet entrées listed here are about 72 to 73 kcal per can, so the per-can number is small compared with the dry food. Count the cans and the kibble against the same daily target.
- The guide doesn't state the can size for these wet entrées, so we show only the kcal per can that's printed. Check the can you buy.
How we collect these numbers
These figures come from the calorie lines in Purina's own Pro Plan Veterinary Diets 2024 product guide (a PDF on proplanvet.com), which also lists retail Pro Plan formulas. We copied each figure by hand, checked it against the PDF, and link the exact page. We don't use shop listings. Only formulas printed in that guide are listed, so this is not the full Pro Plan range. We keep a figure only if kcal/kg and kcal per serving agree with each other (they must imply a normal cup weight or can size) and fall inside the usual range: 3,000–4,700 kcal/kg for dry food and 600–1,600 kcal/kg for wet food. Anything that doesn't add up goes to a manual review list instead of this page.
