How we collect this data

Vets prescribe calories, but cat food is sold in cups, cans and pouches. The label figure that bridges the two (metabolizable energy, in kcal/kg and kcal per cup or can) is printed in small type and is often hard to find online. We copy it from each brand's own product pages, never shops, and keep a figure only if kcal/kg and kcal per serving agree and fall inside the normal range (3,000–4,700 kcal/kg dry, 600–1,600 wet).

kcal/kg is the energy in one kilogram as sold: divide by 10 for kcal per 100 g. kcal per cup assumes a level 8 oz cup; weighing is more accurate. kcal per can belongs to one can size. Wet food is 75–82% water, so its kcal/kg is a third or less of dry food's.

Questions

How many calories are in a cup of dry cat food?

In our database, dry cat foods range from 271 to 604 kcal per 8 oz cup, with a median of 430. Always use the figure on your own bag.

How many calories are in a can of wet cat food?

Wet foods in our database have 666 to 1,325 kcal/kg. A 3 oz can usually holds 60 to 100 kcal and a 5.5 oz can 100 to 200 kcal, depending on the recipe.

Where do the numbers come from?

Each figure is copied from the brand's own product page or product guide and linked so you can check it. We don't use shop listings. Figures that are inconsistent or outside the normal range are held back for manual review.

Why is my brand missing?

Some brand websites don't publish calorie content, or block automated reading. We only add a brand when we can read its own label data reliably. We'd rather show fewer foods than wrong numbers.

Check with your vet. Every number here is an estimate copied from the manufacturer's published label data on the date shown. Recipes change, and labels are averages. If your cat is losing or gaining weight, has a medical condition or eats a prescription diet, ask your vet for a calorie target before you change portions.
